It Inspires Me to Be a Servant to our Society

Jayanna Weaver Second Career Scholoarship Winner

Jayanna Weaver of Carbondale, IL was awarded the Selected Independent Funeral Homes’ Educational Trust’s Second-Career Scholarship on July 8, 2014. $1,500 was paid toward her studies in the Mortuary Science and Funeral Programat Southern Illinois University.

Formerly a nursing student, Weaver spent four years providing private in-home care for elderly and disabled patients, sparking her interest in a career in funeral service. Weaver recently started volunteering at the Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, IL.

“The Second-Career Scholarship will allow me to focus on school and job shadowing at Hughey Funeral Home,” Weaver explained. “My goal is to put the monetary award to use to show the value of these types of scholarships to students like me. I am grateful for this scholarship because it inspires me to keep being a servant to our society, and I hope to someday pay it forward as Selected Independent Funeral Homes’ Educational Trust has.”

Weaver plans to continue shadowing at the Hughey Funeral Home, where she will intern in the spring semester of her senior year and begin a one-year apprenticeship upon graduation.
