The experience will help me be a stronger and more efficient leader

Shelby Shafer was chosen as the 2014 recipient of the Selected Leadership Academy Scholarship. Shafer, Funeral Director at The Springs Funeral Services in Colorado Springs, Colo., was selected from a notable field of candidates to participate in the Selected Leadership Academy, a two-year structured program offered exclusively to members of Selected Independent Funeral Homes. The scholarship has been made available through a generous contribution from Meadow Hill Corporation, maker of Thumbies.

Shafer comes from a family with a history in funeral service. After acknowledging her passion for the profession, she committed to honing her expertise to pursue a career as a funeral director. In 2007, she joined her family in the construction and opening of a funeral home. Her family’s influence and mentorship led her to complete her education at Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science and earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Mortuary Science in December 2013.

“I am excited to be selected to the Leadership Academy and to receive the scholarship, which makes the opportunity possible,” said Shafer. “I would like to thank both the Selected Leadership Academy and the Educational Trust. I’m confident that the experience will help me be a stronger and more efficient leader and most importantly, a stronger asset to the family funeral business, of which I am a proud part.”

The scholarship will cover Shafer’s registration fee for the two-year enrollment of the 2014 Leadership Academy class. She will also receive a reimbursement payment each year to waive the cost of books. The total estimated value of this scholarship is $4,500. Any individual currently employed full-time (and not a majority owner) at a firm maintaining full membership in Selected Independent Funeral Homes is eligible to apply.
