I Hope to Provide Comfort and Compassion

Maria Torres of Lemont, IL is a June 2015 recipient of the Second-Career Scholarship in the amount of $1,500. Maria attends Worsham College of Mortuary Sciences in Wheeling, IL and is expected to graduate in March 2016.

She has been chosen by the Trust as the second of five Donald W. Tetrick Second-Career Scholarship Award recipients to be awarded over the next two and a half years. Richard Tetrick, President, Heritage Family Funeral Services, Inc. and a former director and secretary-treasurer of Selected Independent Funeral Homes, made a significant donation to the Selected Educational Trust on behalf of his late father Donald W. Tetrick, to support the Trust’s Lifelong Learning program.

Torres was called to funeral service after attending the funeral of a family friend. After spending 26 years feeling unfulfilled as a bank branch manager, she wanted to focus on something new.

“I noticed for the first time what a funeral director truly does. The funeral director was a complete stranger, yet he had a way of comforting us. I hope to provide this level of comfort and compassion to others as I prepare to enter the profession.”
Torres was filled with emotion when she found out that she had been selected for the generous scholarship.
“Being chosen to receive the scholarship reinforces my belief that hard work and perseverance pays off. I have always strived to do my best in every aspect of my life. The effort I put forth into my career as a funeral director will be no different.”
