Gift in Your Will or Living Trust
A gift in your will or trust is a meaningful way to support the Selected Educational Trust. Known as a charitable bequest, a gift in your will is a simple, flexible, and versatile way to ensure the programs and experiences that have positively impacted so many will continue for years to come.

Donor-Advised Funds
A donor-advised fund, which is like a charitable savings account, is an easy, cost-effective way to support the Trust and other causes and organizations important in your life. If you have an existing donor-advised fund, you may direct it to transfer cash or other assets to non-profit organizations including the Selected Educational Trust.
Life Insurance
There are three ways to give life insurance to the Trust:
- Make an outright gift of an existing policy. You can name us as owner and beneficiary of an existing policy.
- Make an outright gift of a new policy. You can take out a new policy and irrevocably name the Trust as the owner and the beneficiary of the insurance contract.
- Name us a beneficiary of a policy. This gift is as simple as updating your beneficiary designation form with the policy holder.
Next Steps
- Contact the plan administrator for a change-of-beneficiary form, or simply download a form from your provider’s website.
- Decide what percentage (1 to 100) you would like the Trust to receive and name us, along with the percentage you chose, on the beneficiary form. Return the completed form.
- Contact the Trust at 847-236-0150 or stefanie@selectedtrust.org to let us know your goals for the gift. We would like to honor and steward your commitment, while also ensuring that your specific wishes are documented during your lifetime.
Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)
A special opportunity for those 70½ years and older, you can give any amount (up to a maximum of $105,000) this year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity without having to pay income taxes on the money. Gifts of any value of $105,000 or less are eligible for this benefit and make a difference at the Trust. This popular gift option is commonly called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), but you may also see it referred to as an IRA Charitable Rollover.
Why Consider This Gift?
- Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see the difference your donation is making.
- If you are required to take minimum distributions, you can use your gift to satisfy all or part of your obligation.
- You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.
- Since the gift does not count as income, it can reduce your annual income level. This may help lower your Medicare premiums and decrease the amount of Social Security that is subject to tax.
No matter your age, you can designate the Trust as the beneficiary of all or a percentage of your IRA and it will pass to us tax-free after your lifetime. The process is simple and just requires you to contact your IRA administrator for a change-of-beneficiary form or download a form from your provider’s website.
